Teaching Note #001
It’s been a while since my last blog post, but from now until the VCE and HSC exams, I’d like to share some of the things I notice while teaching my Year 12 students. Hopefully, these reflections will be helpful to someone one day.
Today, I prepared one of my Year 12 students for the next VCE SAC.
The upcoming SAC combines listening, reading, and writing—a very typical VCE-style assessment.
Over the past few years, I honestly can’t remember a student who has said that listening is their strongest skill. Most students find it to be the most challenging part of learning Japanese, and I completely understand why. They simply don’t get enough opportunities to hear natural Japanese outside the classroom.
Another challenge is that there aren’t many listening resources available.
Besides using iitomo and past VCE listening exams, I often do something much simpler. I read short Japanese sentences aloud and ask my students to translate them into English.
Unlike a real listening test, students don’t get completely lost after missing one word. Instead, they build confidence by understanding one sentence at a time while gradually training their ears.
Since the SAC is just around the corner, we’ll mainly focus on listening practice in class, while reading and writing will be covered through homework.
Personally, I’d love most Year 12 students to have two lessons a week during Semester 2. But I also know how busy they are with all their other subjects.

授業ノート：Year 11・12のリスニング対策
ブログを書くのがだいぶ遅くなりましたが、ここからはVCE、HSC本番に向けて、12年生を指導しながら気づいたことを日々残していこうと思います。いつか誰かの助けになればなと思ってます。
今日はVCEの生徒の次のSAC対策。次はリスニング、リーディングマテリアルからのライティング問題です。複合型になってきて、VCEって感じです。
リスニングって得意な子はっきりいってほとんどいないと思います。今までの生徒、今指導してる生徒全部を思い出してもリスニングは大丈夫、って言っている子聞いたことがありません。それはわかります。一番の難関だと思います。ネイティブの声を聞く機会も少ないでしょうから。
しかもリスニング教材ってめちゃくちゃ限られてきます。とりあえずiitomoと過去問などのリスニングを徹底的にやりますが、他に私がやっているのは、私が簡単な文法の文を読み上げて生徒に翻訳させる、という作業です。リスニング教材と違って、一旦聞き逃した言葉からその後ずっと聞こえなくなっちゃった、、、がなくて少しずつ自信を積み上げてあげられる練習です。
さすがにSAC直前のYear12の子にはこれをたくさんやってあげられるわけじゃないけど、まずは今回のSACトピックに来そうなものの文を読み上げて聞いて訳してもらう。その作業の繰り返しをしていきます。
今回のSACは複合型なので、ライティング、リーディングは宿題でカバーです。
正直、Semester２の12年生には週2のクラスをお勧めしたいですね。でも他の教科でも忙しいからそこんところ難しいですよね、、、。がんばれ12年生！
