Teaching Note #002
Today, I taught my first HSC trial lesson for a high school student in NSW.
Before the lesson, I spent hours analysing past exams and marking criteria.
I thought I knew what to expect.
I was wrong.
Although HSC (NSW) and VCE (Victoria) cover very similar grammar and topics, the way students are assessed is surprisingly different.
So… which exam is harder?
Honestly, I couldn’t decide.
The HSC listening tasks felt slightly easier to me, but the expected answers were much more sophisticated.
To achieve high marks, students need much more than good comprehension. They’re expected to use a wide range of vocabulary, write with accurate grammar, sound natural in Japanese, and even show creativity.
As a native speaker, I found myself thinking,
“Wow… students are expected to write at this level?”
It was definitely a reminder that these exams are challenging—but not impossible.
Like learning any language, success comes from consistent practice. Even 15–30 minutes of Japanese each day can make a huge difference over time.
But the biggest surprise of today’s lesson wasn’t the exam itself.
It was discovering what was really holding my student back.
I’ll share that story in my next post.
