Hi, I’m Makiko — a certified Japanese instructor based in Aichi, Japan. I hold a Master’s degree in Translation from Monash University in Melbourne and have been teaching Japanese since 2011. I officially earned my teaching certification in 2017, and since then, I’ve supported learners from all over the world.

Before becoming a teacher, I worked as a professional translator. Over the years, I’ve taught Japanese to expats and their families, university students, engineers, and children — including professionals from major companies such as Toyota and Boeing, as well as scholarship students through the nonprofit organization Ashinaga.

I was honored to be the most highly evaluated and relied-upon tutor in Toyota’s Japanese language program, a recognition that reflects my commitment to quality and care. At Ashinaga, both staff and students appreciated my warm, adaptable teaching style. One student, who had disliked Japanese and struggled to connect with her previous tutor, quickly opened up during our sessions — eventually coming to enjoy our weekly lessons and make real progress. I believe this came from building trust, treating students as individuals, and creating a relaxed environment where they can feel comfortable and encouraged.

My students often describe me as approachable, supportive, and easy to talk to. One shared:
“She immediately became someone I could confide in and share good news with. Her lessons were clear, her resources excellent, and her support went beyond just learning Japanese — she made the whole journey enjoyable.”

Over the past 12 years, I’ve built strong, trusting relationships with dozens of students from around the world. Many have continued their lessons with me for years, and even after returning to their home countries, we’ve stayed connected as friends. These experiences have shaped who I am as a tutor.

Now, I’m excited to bring that same dedication and care to support Australian high school students preparing for VCE and ATAR Japanese. Helping students reach their university goals — and seeing their confidence grow along the way — has become my next dream and mission.
