Teaching Note #004:
One thing I often notice in speaking lessons is that students can speak fluently, use a wide range of grammar, and produce long answers… yet somehow their responses still feel incomplete.
In Japan, especially in the Kansai region, people often joke, “Where’s the punchline?” (オチないんかい！)
A speaking exam isn’t a comedy show, but Japanese communication often expects a clear ending. Without one, the listener can feel as if something is missing.
I recently noticed this in one of my HSC students. His grammar is excellent, and he can speak confidently for quite a long time. But as I listen, I often find myself thinking,
“Great… and then?”
His answer simply stops.
Instead of ending with a conclusion like,
- “So I’d like to…”
- “Therefore, I think…”
- “Because of that experience, I learned…”
he finishes after describing the situation.
This is even more important in writing. A response without a conclusion often feels incomplete, no matter how good the grammar is.
Speaking is harder because students have to think and organise their ideas while talking. That’s why I encourage them to finish with one simple sentence that expresses their opinion or what they learned.
Every student has different challenges.
Some struggle with grammar.
Some struggle with kanji.
His challenge is learning how to finish an answer.
His HSC Trial is only two weeks away, so we have just two more lessons to fix it.
Hopefully, by exam day, every answer will have a clear and confident ending.
オチの重要性
日本人の会話では、オチがないと面白くないとされます。それは英語でも同じかもしれません。
でも特に関西の日本人の会話ではオチがないと、「オチないんかい！」と笑われることもあります。
私は関西の人間ではありませんが、生徒のスピーキングを聞いていても、オチがないと、「おい！」と内心思うことがあります。笑
上手に話せていて、いろいろな文法を組み合わせて長い文章を作ってがんばってるな、と聞きながら、「え？終わり」みたいなことあります。ライティングしかり。ここで終わるんかい！みたいな文章もあります。
ライティングにオチ、結論がないのは致命的な問題になります。でもスピーキングでも聞き手が日本人である以上、ある程度の上手い落とし方、上手な文章の構成みたいなものがないと、ん？と思われてしまうのではないでしょうか。
もちろんスピーキングはアドリブで言っていることも多いので、話しながら構成を考えるのは難しいですが、結論「なので、私はこう思います・こうしたいです」「だから＊＊したほうがいいと思います」みたいなことをいうのは必須な気がします。
昨日の生徒はHSCのSpeaking Trial間近で特訓しているんですが、文法も話すのも上手なのに唯一このオチ問題がある生徒です。何度も書いていますが、ほんとに生徒一人一人に弱点が違っていて勉強になります。
試験まで練習できるのもあと2回。がんばっていいオチを作れるようにさせないと。
