Teaching Note #006
Two students. The same school. The same SAC. Completely different lessons.
That’s one of the things I love most about being a tutor.
Today, I had two VCE SAC preparation lessons and a trial lesson with a Year 10 student. I’ll write about the trial lesson another day.
The two students are from the same school and have their SAC tomorrow. The second student was introduced to me by the first one, and I’m truly grateful for that.
I often say that every student has different strengths and weaknesses. Even when they’re preparing for the same SAC, my lessons are completely different.
One student struggles with writing, so we focused almost entirely on writing. We practiced the three possible topics in different styles—Persuasive, Informative, and Summary. I think the student is now ready for whatever topic or writing style appears.
The other student struggles with listening. I read the reading materials aloud several times to help the student get used to hearing Japanese, then we practiced summarising the reading in English. Once the content is understood, writing comes naturally for this student.
So today, I taught two completely different lessons for the same SAC.
I believe my role as a tutor is to find what each student needs most and help them with it.

Teaching Note #006
今日は2人のSAC対策と、Year 10の生徒のトライアルレッスン。トライアルについては、また後日書こうと思います。
SAC対策をした2人は同じ学校の生徒で、明日がSACです。1人目の生徒からの紹介で、2人目の子も教えさせてもらっています。こんなありがたいご縁に心から感謝しています。
何度も何度も書いていますが、生徒によって苦手分野はまったく違います。だから、同じ学校の同じSAC対策でも、教える内容はまったく変わります。それがTutorのいいところであり、私が大切にしているところです。
1人目の生徒はライティングが超苦手。今回はReading、Listeningを経てからWritingを書く形式なので超難関ですが、本丸はWriting。なので、ライティングのみに特化しました。
Persuasiveならこの書き方、Informativeならこう、Summaryならこれ、というように、一つのトピックでもスタイルによって書き方や内容を変える練習をたくさんしました。
学校から提示されているトピックは3つ。どのトピックが出ても、どのスタイルを指示されても、どんなReadingやListeningが来ても、ほぼ対応できるでしょう、というくらい練習できたと思います。
そしてもう1人の子はListeningが苦手。なので、Reading教材を私が何度も読み上げ、とにかく日本語を聞き慣れてもらいました。あとはReadingの内容を英語でざっと要約。内容さえつかめれば、クリエイティブな文章が書ける子なので、とにかく内容をつかむことが大事です。
というわけで、今日は同じ学校、同じSACでも、まったく違う内容を教えた一日でした。
その生徒に今必要なことを見つけて助けること。それこそが私の役割だと思っています。
生徒たちも勉強で大変ですが、私自身も「やりきった！」という気持ちでいっぱいです。
